How Many Ml in a Shot?

There are 44 ml in a shot in the United States.

This is rounded from converting the US standard shot measure of 1.5 fluid ounces to milliliters. One fluid ounce equals 29.5735 milliliters, therefore 1.5 oz equals exactly 44.3603 milliliters.

The ml in a shot reflect the definition of a standard alcoholic drink being equal to 0.6 ounces of ethanol. Because most spirits contain 40% alcohol by volume the math works out to 44 ml in a measure of distilled spirit or 14 grams of pure alcohol.

This is different than the standard drink measurements of distilled spirits around the world.

How Many Ml are in a Shot Around The World?

Shots around the world in mililiters - graphic.

The ml in a shot around the world vary significantly based on local customs and laws. The following examples are based on data aggregated by Wikipedia.

    • Germany  20 ml
    • United Kingdom | South Africa  25 ml
    • Australia | India | Serbia  30 ml
    • Ireland  35.5 ml
    • Denmark |Finland | Hungary | Sweden  40 ml
    • Canada  44 ml
    • Greece  45 ml
    • Bulgaria | Poland | Romania | Russia  50 ml
    • Israel |Italy | Japan  60 ml

NOTE: In most countries a double shot is simply the double of the standard mililiters. In the United States however this is not always the case. Commonly a double shot is the standard measure of 44 ml (1.5 oz) plus 15 ml (0.5oz) for a total of just shy of 60 ml or 2 oz.

How Many Ml in a Shot Glass?

Shot glasses typically accomodate the standard measure (how many ml in shot) plus a little extra for leeway. The extra space allows for more comfortable handling of the liquid.

To that end 52 ml (or 1.75 oz) and 60 ml (2 oz ) capacities are common for a shot glass and easily hold the milliliters in a standard shot.

Because many corporate owned bars actually serve shots that are smaller than the standard such as 37 ml (1.25 oz) they use a smaller shot glass with a 44 ml (1.5 oz) capacity.

    Types of Shot Glasses

There is an immense variety in terms of small glass shapes and sizes and the best known include: the single shot glass, the cheater shot glass, the tall shot glass, the rounded shot glass, the flute or tulip shot glass and the pony shot glass.

Read more about the make and usage of these most popular shot glasses here.

How Many Ml is a Shooter?

A shooter is a blended, mixed, stirred or layered mixture of two or more distilled spirits. Therefore it is typically larger than the standard 44 ml shot of alcohol.

Depending on the actual shooter cocktail recipe there are 60 ml or 90 ml in a shooter, sometimes more.

Shooter glasses can comfortably hold these amounts, sometimes up to 150 ml for more elaborate drinks.

How Many Shots Are in a 750 ml Bottle?

There are exactly 17 standard size US shots in a 750 ml bottle.

That being said, if you were in Bulgaria and measuring the larger shot size will yield a smaller number, i.e. 750ml/50ml= 15 shots. And if you were in Germany you might feel really lucky to score almost 37 and a half shots out of the same bottle (750ml/20ml=37.5 shots).

The size of the standard bottle of liquor is related to the concept of a fifth of a liquor. This old measurement for distilled beverages and wine is based on the concept of one fifth of a gallon, which is 757 mililiters. The metric fifth that replaced it is now a standard capacity for a bottle of alcohol all over the world. Read more about Shots in a Fifth here.

How Many Shots in a Pint?

A US liquid pint contains exactly 473.176 milliliters. Divide that by the standard 44 ml measure of a shot and get about ten, almost eleven standard shots.

    Other Ways to Measure Shots

If you do not have a measuring jigger or another milliliter measure handy you can easily use measuring spoons instead. It will help you pour the correct amount of alcohol you need for a vodka cocktail or simply a standard neat whiskey, tequila shot or on the rocks drink.

One tablespoon contains exactly 14.7868 ml of liquid, so the folllowing measures are near perfect.

    1 tablespoon = 15 ml
    2 tablespoon = 30 ml
    3 tablespoon =45 ml
    4 tablespoon = 60 ml

Another way to pour shots of alcohol is the 4-count method used by bartenders. It takes a bit of practice before you can use it reliably mostly because it entails free pouring a double shot or 90 ml (2 oz, a standard larger cup of a jigger) while you count to four.

How Many Ml are in a Shot of Espresso?

In addition to alcoholic beverages, espresso shots are also subject to size standardization in milliliters when the metric system is used or fluid ounces when the imperial system is preferred.

A single espresso shot is 30 ml (29.574 to be exact) or 1 fl oz. It is also known as a solo.
